10 ENDED TV SERIES TO BINGE-WATCH DURING THIS SUMMER

Is that time of the year again.  The warm wheather is back, the laziness is back [if it went away at some point...]. People are travelling abroad, but that might not be your case. Now, you have the time. Now, you have the urge. So  If you're best plans for the summer are Netflix on bed 24/7, I have some suggestions for you.

E é novamente Verão. O calor voltou, a preguiça voltou [se é que alguma vez fugiu]. Muitas são as pessoas que começam a viajar para fora do país, o que pode não ser o teu caso. Mas agora tens tempo. Agora tens a vontade. Por isso, se o teu plano para o Verão é veres todas as séries possíveis e imaginárias sentado/a no teu sofá, eu tenho sugestões para ti.

I decided to choose only tv series which has already ended. And 'why?' you ask, because there's plenty of great series that had already ended and after you watch them you don't have the pressure to catch up new episodes during the fall to spring season. Let's do it!

Eu decidi escolher apenas séries que já tenham terminado. E 'porquê?' perguntam vocês, porque existe uma panóplia de grandes séries que já terminaram e após assistires às mesma, não tens de sentir a pressão de assistir a novos episódios na altura em que estiveres mais ocupado. Vamos a isso!

Parks & Recreation

One of the best comedy show ever. Comedy Awards and Golden Globe winner. It has one of the funniest cast ever on television: Amy Poehler (Saturday Night Live), Chris Pratt (Guardians of The Galaxy, Jurassic World), Nick Offerman (21 Jump Street, The Kings Of Summer), Rashida Jones (The Office, The Social Network, Celeste & Jesse Forever), Rob Lowe (West Wing, Brothers & Sisters) , Adam Scott (The Vicious Kind, Our Idiot Brother) and Audrey Plaza (The To Do List, Funny People, Safety Not Guaranteed), for example. It follow the Parks And Recreation Department team in the ficcional town of Pawnee, Indiana. It features a lot of great guest-stars such as: Michelle Obama, Joe Biden, John McCain, Kristen Bell, J K Simmons, Heidi Klum, etc.

You'll like it if you like: Modern Family, The Office and a good comedy (let's be honest).

Harper's Island

Henry and Trish are engaged, so they decided to gather their friends and family to celebrate their wedding in Harper's Island. The story is told by the point of view of the best girl friend of the groom, Abby Mills, who is afraid to return to the island after her mother and five other people were brutally murdered by a serial killer named John Wakefield, seven years before the wedding. However, someone decides to follow Wakefield's footsteps and starts to kill the wedding guests, one by one and only a few will survive. So the premise of the show is to find out who the killer is and who will survive, during 13 episodes.

You'll like it if you like: Slasher Movies (Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer) 

Henry e Trish estão noivos e por isso reúne amigos e familiares para celebrarem o seu matrimónio na ilha Harper. A história é contada sob a perspetiva da melhor amiga do noivo, Abby Mills, que receia voltar à ilha após a sua mãe e mais cinco pessoas terem sido assassinadas pelo serial killer John Wakefield, sete anos antes do casamento. Contudo, alguém decidi seguir as pisadas de Wakefield e começa a matar os convidados, um por um e apenas alguns irão sobreviver. E é exatamente essa a premissa da história é compreender quem é o/a assassínio/a e quem sobrevive, durante os 13 episódios.

Vais gostar se gostas de: Filmes do género slasher (Scream, Eu Sei o Que Fizeste no Verão Passado) 

The Big C

Laura Linney (Love Actually) portrays a reserved high school teacher who is diagnosed with a melanoma. The series follows the life after diagnosis e the way Linney's character deals with cancer, with her professional life, love and her family. Laura won a Golden Globe, an Emmy and a Satellite Awards with this role. The Big C is a dramedy (neologism created in the television 'slang' that puts together two different styles: drama and comedy) with an exquisite script. 

You'll like it if you like: A dramedy driven by a strong female lead role

Laura Linney (O Amor Acontece) dá a vida a uma reservada professora numa escola secundária, que foi diagnosticada com um melanoma. A série segue a sua vida pós-diagnóstico e a forma como lida com o cancro, a sua vida profissional, amorosa e familiar. Este papel rendeu a Linney : um Globo de Ouro, um Emmy e um Satellite Award. The Big C é uma dramédia (neologismo criado na gíria televisiva que une o género drama com a comédia) com um argumento extraordinário.

Skins (UK)

Not to be confused with Skins US. Skins is a dramedy tv series that follow the journey of a group of young friends that live in Bristol, UK. The series divides itself in three generation and every generation has two seasons, which means that the show has six seasons (from 8 to 10 episodes each) plus a final season (with 6 episodes), so seven seasons. Each episode has a different lead role, which will allow us to get to know more about every character. Is one of the most polemics tv shows of all time because it features some tabu topics such as adolescent sexuality, substance abuse, mental ilness, bullying, dysfuncional families. Although the target are the young adults/teenagers, Skins has a very mature and deep script that is bonded with the one of the best cinematography direction I've seen in any television project. The cast has a few of (now) international stars, such as: Nicholas Hoult (X-Men , Mad Max: Fury Road), Dev Patel (The Newsroom, Slumdog Billionaire), Hannah Murray (Game Of Thrones), Kaya Scodelario (Maze Runner), Joe Dempsie (Game Of Thrones), Jack O'Connell (Unbroken, 71) e Kathryn Prescott (Finding Carter).

You'll like it if you like: A tasteful and well-writeen teen series.

Não confundir com Skins US. Skins é uma série dramática que segue a vida de vários jovens da cidade de Bristol, no Reino Unido. A série divide-se em 3 gerações, sendo que cada uma detém duas temporadas, ou seja, seis temporadas (de 8 a 10 episódios) mais a temporada final (de 6 episódios), logo são 7 temporadas. Cada episódio tem um protagonista diferente, o que nos permite conhecer o seu mundo. É uma das mais polémicas de sempre pois aborda temas tabu como a sexualidade juvenil, o uso de substâncias, distúrbios mentais, bullying, famílias disfuncionais. Apesar do público-alvo ser jovem, a série tem um argumento muito maduro e com imensa profundidade, que é 'pintado' com uma das melhores direções de fotografia que conheci em qualquer projeto televisivo. O elenco reúne algumas caras que hoje são estrelas mundiais: Nicholas Hoult (X-Men , Mad Max: Fury Road), Dev Patel (The Newsroom, Slumdog Billionaire), Hannah Murray (Game Of Thrones), Kaya Scodelario (Maze Runner), Joe Dempsie (Game Of Thrones), Jack O'Connell (Unbroken, 71) e Kathryn Prescott (Finding Carter).

Angels In America

Masterpiece. That's the best description for this 2003 HBO mini-series. Mike Nicholls (Closer, Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolf?, The Graduate) directed it. Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Emma Thompson, Patrick Wilson, Justin Kirk, Mary-Louise Parker star on it. The story is passed during the Ronald Reagan era, and the spreading of the AIDS epidemic is one of the main themes.

You'll like it if you like: A television masterpiece. Or the TV movie "A Normal Heart", which has a similar background story. And Meryl Streep portrays four different characters (and one of them is a male rabbi).

Obra de Arte. Esta é a melhor descrição que encontro para a mini-série de 2003 do canal HBO. Mike Nicholls (realizador de Closer, Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolf?, The Graduate) realizou-a. Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Emma Thompson, Patrick Wilson, Justin Kirk, Mary-Louise Parker fazem parte do elenco. A história passa-se na época de Ronald Reagan e tem como tema principal a propagação da Sida. 

Vais gostar se gostas de: Uma obra de arte televisiva. Ou do telefilme "A Normal Heart", que se passa na mesma época. E a Meryl Streep desempenha quatro personagens diferentes (e uma dessas é um rabino).

American Horror Story

I know, I know American Horror Story is still on air, but the true is that the show is an anthology series, so you can watch any of the season because they all have different stories. Jessica Lange shines every single season and proves that she's an chameleon. But the cast of AHS is always amazing: Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Angela Bassett, Evan Peters, Zachary Quinto and so on. Ryan Murphy is a genius and I rest my case.

You'll like it if you like: A good horror story

Eu sei, eu sei, American Horror Story ainda não terminou, mas a verdade é que a série é uma antologia, logo podes assistir a qualquer uma das temporadas, porque todas elas têm histórias diferentes (com início e conclusão). Jessica Lange brilha em todas as temporadas e prova que é camaleónica. Mas o resto do elenco não lhe fica atrás: Sarah Paulson, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Angela Bassett, Evan Peters, Zachary Quinto e por aí adiante. Ryan Murphy é um génio e tenho dito.

Friends

One of the best tv series comedies of all time, and for some people it's considered THE best comedy show of all time. 236 episodes, it's a big journey, but let me remind you that all of them has only 20 and something minutes.

You'll like it if you like: How I Met Your Mother, Happy Endings, New Girl, which are series that basically follow the same line of Friends.

Smash

Smash received the support of critics in its pilot episode, but since the premiere, the critics gradually 'turn their back' to the series. But the truth is that Smash has an Emmy, an huge fanbase and it has a very unique premise : a musical tv show - packed with original songs - the displays the behind the scenes of the Broadway universe . The characters of Katherine McPhee  (runner up on the fifth season of "American Idol" and currently on the show "Scorpion") and Megan Hilty (Broadway star) fight for the role of Marilyn Monroe in the play "Bombshell" written by the characters of Debra Messing (The Mysteries of Laura, Will & Grace) and Christian Borle (two-times Tony Award winner). The cast also features Anjelica Houston (The Adams Family, Prizzi's Honor) and Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Carribean). The series also has amazing guest stars: Uma Thurman (Kill Bill), Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls), Nick Jonas (Kingdom, Scream Queens), Bernadette Peters (Broadway star) and Liza Minnelli (Cabaret), are some examples.

Smash recebeu o carinho da crítica com o seu episódio piloto, mas desde a exibição do mesmo, a crítica foi gradualmente 'virando as costas' à série. Mas a verdade é que Smash é uma inovação dentro do seu estilo: uma série musical - recheada de músicas originais- que retrata os bastidores do universo da Broadway e detentora de um Emmy. As personagens de Katherine McPhee (que ficou em 2º lugar na quinta temporada de "American Idol" e participa atualmente na série "Scorpion") e Megan Hilty (estrela da Broadway) lutam pelo papel de Marylin Monroe na peça "Bombshell" escrita pelas personagens Debra Messing (The Mysteries of Laura, Will & Grace) e Christian Borle (estrela Broadway e vencedor de dois Tony Awards). Glue

British drama series with only a season that concludes the whole story. Is written by Jack Thorne (who has also a writer on Skins) and it follows the life of a group of friend that lives in the English countryside. The plot revolves around a 14 years old boy who has found dead. Just like Skins, this series has an amazing young cast, a brilliant cinematography and a very deep and mature script. 8 episodes that you cannot just stop watch.

You'll like it if you like: Skins

Série juvenil britânica com apenas uma temporada e com início e conclusão. É escrita por Jack Thorne (que também escreveu para Skins) e segue a vida de um grupo de amigos que vive na parte mais rural do Reino Unido. A história gira em torno de um adolescente de 14 anos, que foi encontrado morto. Assim como Skins, a série brilha a nível de elenco (que é bem jovem), a nível de fotografia e na profundidade do argumento. 8 episódios que se vêem num ápice.

The Following

An exhilarating American drama series created by Kevin Williamson (Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer), follows FBI agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) trying to help recapture serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), while Carroll's assembled cult sends Carroll's messages to the world. It only has three seasons and his filled with cults, mentally unbalanced people, bad cops. 

You'll like it if you like: Crime/Murder Series or Williamson's work
