NEXT ON THE BOOKSHELF

I always want to read two hundred thousand books a year and I end up reading at most ten. This year I'm trying to counter this trend and trying to beat 'my personal record". I've already read five books so far, with the sixth about to end and now I will present to you my upcoming readings.

Eu tenho sempre a pretensão de ler duzentos mil livros por ano e acabo por ler no máximo uma dezena deles. Este ano estou a tentar contradizer essa tendência e tentar bater o ‘meu recorde pessoal’. Já conto com cinco livros lidos, com o sexto prestes a terminar e agora apresento-vos a minha lista dos cincos que se seguem.

O Quarto de Jack de Emma Donoghue

I have a habit which I guess is shared by many people: I like to read books that will be adapted to movies. This book is a example of that. "Room" tells the story of Jack - a five-years old - and his mother, together live in a small room, what Jack does not know is that this place where he feels safe is also the prison where her mother has been held against her will. 

Eu tenho um hábito que penso que é partilhado por muita gente que é o gosto de ler os livros que vão receber uma adaptação cinematográfica. Este é um desses casos. “O Quarto de Jack” conta a história de Jack – com cinco anos- e a sua mãe que vivem num quarto de pequenas dimensões, o que Jack não sabe é que este sítio onde se sente seguro é também a prisão onde a sua mãe tem sido mantida contra a sua vontade. O livro faz parte do Plano Nacional de Leitura português.

Yes Please by Amy Poehler

I am the biggest fan of Amy Poehler work, she’s unquestionably one of the funniest women in the world. "Yes, please" is not 'nothing more' than a memoir in which Poehler retells a few histories in a very fun way. Fan, who is a truly fan does not pass a book like this one.

Eu sou o maior admirador do trabalho de Amy Poehler, é inquestionavelmente uma das mulheres mais divertidas do mundo. “Yes, please” não é ‘nada mais’ do que uma livro de memórias que Poehler vai contando de forma divertida. Fã, que é fã não passa um livro destes.

The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman

A Luz Entre Oceanos de M. L. Stedman

ML Stedman's debut book will be adapted to the big screen and will debut this year. Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz have the leading roles in this film that tells the story of Tom Sherbourne that after World War I, accepts a lighthouse keeper station on a remote island in the Australian coast. Although they are pleased with the calm and comfort offered by the island, Tom and his wife Isabel feel frustrated because they can not have children. Everything changes when an April morning, a boat gives the coast and within this  lay a man dead and a baby was crying. The couple decides to follow their heart, but their decision will have terrible consequences.

O livro de estreia de M.L. Stedman vai ser adaptado ao cinema e estreará ainda este ano. Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander e Rachel Weisz protagonizarão o filme que contará a história de Tom Sherbourne que após a Primeira Guerra Mundial, aceita um posto de faroleiro numa remota ilha na costa australiana. Embora estejam satisfeitos com a calma e conforto oferecido pela ilha, Tom e a sua esposa Isabel sentem-se frustrados por não conseguirem ter filhos. Tudo muda, quando numa manhã de Abril, um barco dá à costa e dentro deste encontrava-se um homem sem vida e um bebé a chorar. O casal decide seguir o coração, contudo a sua decisão terá sequelas assoladoras. 

Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green & David Levithan

John Green is undoubtedly one of my favorite authors. I've read all his books, but now I need to read his books that were written in collaboration with other authors such as "Let It Snow" and "Will Grayson, Will Grayson". In the latter, Green joins David Levithan and they decided to split the book into two equal parts: John Green wrote the odd-numbered chapters and Levithan the even-numbered chapters. Each one was responsible for the development of a character and agreed that these two characters would meet somewhere in the book and that would have a strong impact on the lives of both. I have more than reasons to read “Will Grayson, Will Grayson”.

John Green é indubitavelmente um dos meus autores favoritos. Já li todos os seus livros, contudo faltam-me agora os livros que foram escritos em colaboração com outros autores como é o cado de “Quando a Neve Cai” e “Will Grayson, Will Grayson”. Neste último, Green junta-se a David Levithan e decidem dividir o livro em duas partes iguais: John Green escreveu os capítulos ímpares e Levithan os capítulos pares. Cada um ficou responsável por o desenvolver de uma personagem e acordaram que estas duas personagens se iam encontrar algures durante o livro e que teria um forte impacto na vida de ambas. São mais do que razões para que eu o leia.

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

Objetos Cortantes de Gillian Flynn

I watched Gone Girl and I was so excited about the plot that I forced myself to read something else from Gillian Flynn. After reading "Dark Places", I was fascinated by the dark writing of the author and therefore "Sharps Objects" must be on this list. The book tells the story of journalist Camille Preaker, who after a brief hospitalization in a psychiatric hospital, is forced to head to the city where she was raised to cover a case of the murder of two young girls. Camille did not maintain contact with his mother or with his half-sister for many years. The journalist begins to identify with the victims and therefore she will have to confront the ghosts of the past. I've read many reviews that say this is the best Flynn's book, let's see.

Eu vi Gone Girl e fiquei tão entusiasmado com o argumento que me obriguei a ler algo de Gillian Flynn. Após ter lido “Lugares Escuros”, fiquei fascinado pela escrita sombria da autora e por isso, “Objetos Cortantes” tem de fazer parte desta lista. O livro relata a história da jornalista Camille Preaker, que após um breve internamento num hospital psiquiátrico, vê-se obrigada a rumar à cidade onde foi criada para cobrir um caso do homicídio de duas raparigas. Camille não mantinha contato com a sua mãe nem com a sua meia-irmã. A jornalista começa a identificar-se com as vítimas e por isso terá de confrontar os fantasmas do passado. Já li muitos comentários que afirmam que este é o melhor livro de Flynn, depois digo-vos se concordo com esta opinião.
